What to Wear in Lisbon on a Port Day
Cobbles, hills and Sintra mist — dress for Portugal's terrain, not the pool deck.
Lisbon's calçada cobbles, seven hills and Sintra's cooler microclimate catch unprepared cruise passengers every season. This guide covers footwear, layers and practical packing for city, Sintra and coast days.
Footwear: closed-toe shoes with grippy soles are essential — not flip-flops, not pool slides. Alfama cobbles and Sintra palace paths are unforgiving. Walking shoes or trainers beat fashion sneakers.
Layers: Lisbon city can be warm (20–30°C April–October) but Sintra is often 5–8°C cooler with mist and wind. Bring a light jacket or cardigan for Sintra excursions even in summer.
Sun protection: Atlantic coast and miradouros offer limited shade. Hat, sunglasses and SPF 30+ from April through October.
Rain: Lisbon receives rain October–March. Compact umbrella or packable rain jacket — Sintra mist does not require full waterproofing but a light layer helps.
Churches and Fatima: modest dress (shoulders and knees covered) for Jerónimos interior, cathedral visits and Fatima sanctuary.
Hiking (Scenic Sintra Hiking): proper hiking shoes, not city trainers. Trail sections can be muddy after rain.
Evening return: you will be back on board before dinner — port day dress is daywear only. No need for formal attire ashore.
